Govt to consider encouraging small retailers

A government advisor has visited Rotherham to devise new plans to encourage small and independent retailers and address the vacant shop problem, which could create new logistics opportunities for those involved in supply chain transport planning.

Mary Portas, dubbed the Queen of Shops, has highlighted the strong response to the consultation and the large number of ideas that people have put forward to encourage further development in the retail sector.

She said: "I am actively encouraging everyone who cares about the future of the high street to have their say. I am working through all the ideas in the many contributions received and listening to key stakeholders including big and small retailers."

The independent consultation is also considering new business models for high street stores and how to prevent the proliferation of so-called 'clone towns', which could affect the way that the logistics industry operates.

Matthew Hopkinson, director of the Local Data Company, recently predicted that supply chain transport planning will be affected by the growing number of retailers establishing out-of-town sites.
