Green supply chains require constant monitoring in order to ensure their continuing sustainability, according to an expert.
Dave Meyer, a supply chain analyst, told news website triplepundit.com that being vigilant with suppliers is crucial for companies looking to maintain sustainable supply chains.
Companies resolved to 'greening' their supply chains had to go beyond simply seeking assurances from suppliers and drawing up 'in theory' strategies, Mr Meyer said.
"Most practitioners believe... that sustainable sourcing and green supply chain effectiveness must include supplier monitoring and verification to truly be effective and sustainable," he said.
In recent weeks, two major companies have announced measures to reduce the environmental impact of their supply chains.
Car manufacturer Ford said it would analyse the carbon footprint of 35 of its major suppliers in a bid to lower its overall CO2 emissions.
Meanwhile, Nestle revealed that it would work with the Forest Trust to make changes to the supply chain of the palm oil it uses in many of its products.
