The approach companies take to logistics inventory strategies has been transformed by the growth in internet retail, an expert has claimed.
Penelope Ody, writing for Supply Chain Standard, has highlighted the fact that the supply pipeline used to be straightforward with takeaway, home delivery or post being the key options.
She said that many customers are now buying from a virtual catalogue where deliveries can come direct from a number of different suppliers.
Ms Ody claimed: "Those customers will also expect the goods to arrive in one consignment and will also probably expect an SMS message or email confirming dispatch and a second text on the day of delivery giving an approximate delivery time."
She warned that
logistics inventory strategy delays further squeeze tight margins as customers phone to enquire about the whereabouts of their delivery.
Globalisation has also had a transformative effect on the sector, with WWPC – WorldWide Partnership's Leslie Taylor-McLaughlin recently telling IFW that this has made supply chain transport strategies more important than ever.
