The Road Haulage Association (RHA) is urging the government to take action and create more safe places to park alongside the UK's roads.
In its formal response to the Department for Transport's (DfT) consultation on roadside facilities, the body said that truck stops do not have to be as secure as Fork Knox, but they should be safer than they currently are.
It added that the government should demand higher standards from motorway service operators and take steps to make it more attractive for truck parking providers to invest in security measures, for example by reducing rateable values.
"Improved security would deter crime against the transport industry and reduce the demands on police resources," says RHA security and infrastructure manager Chrys Rampley.
The DfT's roadside facilities consultation closed on July 2nd and aimed to seek views on the development of truck stops accessed from the motorway, the availability of alternative fuels and signage.
