Russia claims Ukraine is preventing gas reaching EU

Gas supplies to Europe were started once again by Russia's Gazprom yesterday (January 13th) but have since been halted by Ukraine, the gas provider's deputy chief executive has claimed.

The news comes after days of arguments between Russia and Ukraine during which gas failed to reach Western European countries.

"We believed yesterday that the door for Russian gas was open but again it's been blocked by the Ukrainians," said Gazprom deputy chief executive Alexander Medvedev.

The dispute can serve as an appropriately-timed reminder to businesses in the UK to ensure that their own supply chains area varied enough to shelter them from any suppliers going bankrupt.

Supply chains are becoming increasingly recognised as the heart of a company's organisation, but also a way in which companies are exposed to external weaknesses.

A supply chain management company can do much to help a business reduce its exposure to failing suppliers, in order to save a business both time and money should a link in their chain collapse.
