Cocoa farmers to benefit from ethical supply chains

Wednesday, 14/1/2009 11:02
The World Cocoa Foundation yesterday (January 14th) announced sustainability principles and goals aimed at offering the world's cocoa farmers the benefit of economic and social development.

Two years in the making, the announcement included talks with governments of cocoa-producing nations in Asia, West Africa and the Americas.

"The World Cocoa Foundation is a partnership of nearly 70 member companies fully committed to sustainable cocoa growing," said Bill Guyton, president.

"This means helping farmers grow the crop profitably, safely and responsibly, as well as with care for the environment. Our announcement of these sustainability principles and goals will ensure that our partnerships and programs are strategically focused and help drive positive change in cocoa-growing communities where it is most needed."

Supply chains have recently become a larger focus for companies hoping to become greener, and promote their ethical credentials.

Supply chain management companies can help businesses improve their green credentials by creating sustainable supply chains or by reducing the CO2 emitted through traditional supply chains.
