JLR boss: Auto supply chains failing

Jaguar Land Rover chief executive David Smith has announced that the UK car manufacturing supply chain is rapidly failing, and called on the government to provide "urgent and practical" solutions for the car industry, a Birmingham Post report has stated.

The announcement comes after business secretary Peter Mandelson confirmed that the government would free up £2.3 billion in loans for the car manufacturing industry in an attempt to stimulate its investment in green technology.

The Birmingham Post quoted Mr Smith speaking at the Auto Industry Summit: "In 25 years in the car industry, I have never experienced a time quite like this

"We have suppliers at the moment going into bankruptcy every one or two days - this is a very, very serious problem now.

"We need the funds the government is guaranteeing to arrive quickly. With the key March selling month just around the corner further work has to be expedited and accelerated if we are to fill our plants again."

The comments come as supply chain management has been brought much more into the central operations of many businesses since the onset of the financial crisis.

A third-party supply chain management company could restructure an organisation's supply chain to provide savings for businesses, or even to reduce a business' CO2 emissions.
