NHS supply chain fears grow

Concerns over the threat of counterfeit drugs entering the NHS have grown recently, it has been reported, following the publication of figures which show that British border officials seized half a million counterfeit pills last year.

The number of pills which made it through to the NHS, however, is said to be around eight million, suggesting a distinct problem with the supply chain.

Graham Satchwell, the former head of Scotland Yard's organised crime group told the Guardian: "There are hundreds of dealers, and they are selling drugs as legitimate and genuine materials.

"Once it has been sold to the dealer, it can go anywhere in the NHS."

The problem highlights to many other businesses the importance of securing a supply chain in order to protect it from counterfeit or poor-quality goods.

Businesses hoping to ensure their own supply chains are strengthened could do well to contact a supply chain management company, which could assess a supply chain from an outsider's viewpoint.
