Shipping goods in reusable wrapping as opposed to cardboard boxes can reduce the amount of CO2 emissions a company produces by up to 20 per cent, one office furniture manufacturer has found out.
"We were amazed at how shipping chairs and tables wrapped in protective blankets instead of cardboard containers could translate into such a sizable reduction in carbon dioxide emissions," said Andy Card, president and CEO of the logistics company which oversaw the adaptation of the furniture supply chain Haworth.
Haworth is the world's third-largest office furniture manufacturer, and as such can make significant CO2 savings throughout the globe.
The two-month study found that the amount of emissions that could be saved in any year equals that of taking 52 cars off the road for a year, or 283 metric tonnes in total.
Any company in the UK hoping to reduce their own carbon footprint by increasing their supply chain efficiency may wish to involve a third party supply chain management company.
A supply chain management company can lend its own experience and fresh approach to a company's supply chain, in order to provide the best solutions to a company.
