Fleet managers and those involved in
logistics transport planning have a key role to play in boosting their organisation's sustainability, an expert has claimed.
Neeral Shah, development officer at Global Action Plan, has highlighted the fact that teaching the fleet eco-driving techniques can minimise energy use, carbon emissions and the amount of fuel that is needed.
He said that these techniques also help to boost safety and minimise the wear and tear inflicted on the vehicle, helping to reduce the consumption of a wide range of different resources.
Mr Shah also backed the use of financial incentives to encourage sustainable car usage, suggesting that by attaching a reward of this kind to good practice it can encourage a wider range of people to adopt the methods.
He added that while this approach will work in 70 per cent of cases, a number of other drivers could be better persuaded by encouraging them on other grounds, such as sustainability.
The importance of minimising fuel costs was recently highlighted by the Freight Transport Association, which warned that high fuel costs are putting pressure on
supply chain transport planning.
