Plans for a massive logistics park in Calais which will transform have been officially unveiled.
Some £1.8 million will be spent in turning in a disused field into the 160 hectare Calais Premier development, which is already being dubbed as 'the UK’s continental gateway'.
Construction will begin next year and the first stage is set for completion in 2013-14 before the entire project is finished in 2015.
The site, which is ideally located between the port and the Channel tunnel, will also include a rail network on the Calais to Dunkirk line.
Didier Caudard-Breille, managing director of DCB International, said that the project's first phase is likely to create "thousands of new jobs" and will bring up to £264 million of investment into the region.
The site include buildings that can be used as storage space by both UK importers and exporters.
Plans for the logistics park come at a time when the size of the Port of Calais is set to be doubled at a cost of £350 million.
