A complex supply chain consisting of products from countries around the globe increases the difficulty involved with regulating the supply, it has been claimed.
The Sydney Morning Herald has published a report which details the dangers of complex and wide supply chains which may be open to manipulation in countries where manufacturing regulations are less stringent.
A University of Wollongong associate professor, Heather Yeatman, told the paper that products bought in a supermarket will almost certainly be sourced from around the globe.
"The issue here is that companies are self-regulating and they should have their audit processes in place to make sure there's a uniform standard that applies to all their source providers.
"That's where the system has fallen down... There need to be stringent systems in place where you're able to track down and identify those agents that are deliberately doing wrong in the supply chain."
Any company hoping to reassess its own supply chain, be it for safety, environmental or financial benefits, may look to a third party supply chain management company to provide expert knowledge in the field.
