IBM is teaming up with Volkswagen Group to help improve the vehicle manufacturer's supply chain.
The company announced yesterday (March 24th) that it will be employing the use of sensor technology to bolster the logistics of the well-known automaker.
This system has been piloted for a year and involved IBM and Volkswagen testing RFID technology with suppliers, with approximately 3,000 shipping containers being fitted with "passive RFID tags".
As part of the implementation of the new system, RFID tags will now be fitted to shipping containers which are delivering auto parts to Volkswagen on a much more regular basis.
IBM global sensor solutions executive Kurt Rindle said that the results of the pilot will have long-reaching implications.
He commented: "Volkswagen is driving innovation by becoming the first vehicle manufacturer to make daily use of RFID technology in the flow of materials between suppliers and the manufacturing line."
Volkswagen is now planning to introduce the new technology at its German-based central logistics hall.
