The Olympics in Beijing have become a beacon of good logistics organisation, one report has suggested, after it managed to accomplish the mammoth task of coordinating the several thousand people responsible for the games.
Such a huge task is often accompanied by oversights or unforeseen hurdles, but many companies looking to assess the state of their logistics could learn from the Beijing games, which have so far apparently gone off without a hitch.
Already however, the games have had a direct impact on the supply chains of many international companies, as Olympic organisers have shut down over 100 factories and a number of coal-fired power stations, meaning raw materials have become more expensive in the past few months.
Essentially though, after handling over 1.2 million pieces of sporting equipment for the 200 countries involved, the $5.8 billion budget for supply chain and logistics at the games appears to have been well spent.
Any company inspired to make changes to its own supply chain management however may wish to outsource such management, to take advantage of experienced and knowledgeable experts on supply chain management.
