The importance of effective supply chain strategy has been highlighted by a vehicle manufacturer that managed to save €1 million (£0.87 million) in lost production due to an emergency logistical response team.

Two consecutive faults in the supply chain resulted in a communications breakdown and the company had to rely on automotive emergency specialist Evolution Time Critical to deliver its electrical components.

The importance of supply chain planning was highlighted by the steps required to address a fault, which included the booking of three charter flights and the hiring of a fleet of light vans.

Brad Brennan, managing director of the firm, highlighted the importance of having plans in place to deal with this type of failure.

He said: "This was a situation where a great deal of ingenuity was called for; no amount of money would have bought the time needed to get all the parts to the UK, so we needed to think laterally."
