Operators which use the M6 toll road are set to be hit with an increase in costs after it was announced that HGV charges are to rise from March 1st.
It will be the eighth price hike in just nine years and sees the fee per journey rise from £10.60 to £11.
The announcement comes shortly after road operators Midland Expressway (MEL) revealed that the number of users for the stretch of motorway fell by ten per cent between October and December last year.
MEL boss Tom Fanning said: “Increasing a toll is not a decision we take lightly and we believe the new toll levels remain unbeatable value for money.
“The costs of operating and maintaining a world class motorway and ensuring the investors who provided the funds receive a return on their investment must be part of our considerations when setting the level of tolls.”
MEP Mike Nattrass has called for the road to be nationalised so that private owners cannot push the prices up whenever they feel fit.
