More than half of logistics firms are seeing money go to waste because they do give their staff training on how to drive in a safe and cost effective manner.
A study conducted by TomTom Business found that 54 per cent of companies have not introduced any formal training courses of their employees, while 34 per cent have not even given their drivers a single fuel saving tip.
This is despite rising fuel costs and most operators having to operate inside much smaller budgets than in previous years.
According to Safe and Fuel Efficient Driving (SAFED), a group set up by the Department for Transport to promote improved standards in commercial vehicles, adopting a more economical driving style can save a firm 14 per cent a year in fuel.
“Appropriate driver training can have a significant impact on a fleet’s cost base,” said Giles Margerison, director UK & Ireland for TomTom Business Solutions.
“Heavy acceleration, braking and excessive speed have the biggest negative impact on fuel economy and it is important employees are made aware of the knock-on effects caused by bad driving habits.”
The Freight Transport Association’s Manager’s Guide to Distribution Costs, which was published in 2011, stated that fuel prices are the biggest concern facing
transport planning managers at present.
