An expert has claimed that to create a financially productive workforce, it is important that it is balanced by both sexes.

Karen Gill, director of everywoman, has claimed that many are now more equally balanced in terms of gender, but it is managerial positions that women are often overlooked for.

She added that it was "essential" for companies to focus on "encouraging and supporting" female workers.

"There has been much debate that the macho culture in the city contributed in part to the economic downturn, how great a part we're not sure we’ll ever know," she concluded.

According to a recent study, research commissioned by recruitment scoring website HireScores.com found that 81 per cent of British business manager would ask a female job applicant whether or not they planned on having children or if they were pregnant if it was allowed.

As such questions are illegal due to employment law, 50 per cent of managers admitted that they factored a woman's age and relationship status into their recruitment decision.
