Examiners from the Vehicle and Operator Service Agency (VOSA) have begun issuing fixed penalties to drivers that make infringements during roadside enforcement checks.
It is a move welcomed by the Freight Transport Association (FTA), which has claimed that it will lead to improvements in road safety.
Joan Williams, the FTA's head of road freight and enforcement policy, said that the new checks were "good news".
"Crucially, foreign drivers who fail to comply with the rules will not be able to slip through the cracks anymore as any driver issued with a fixed penalty who cannot provide a suitable UK address will be required to pay a deposit at the roadside and if necessary the vehicle will be immobilised until the deposit is paid," she commented.
The move may mean that British companies that source goods from abroad will need to make sure that drivers coming into the UK are fully aware of driving rules and laws.
