Online retailers 'set for busy Christmas'

Online trade and retail is continuing to hold up, despite the impact of the recession on consumer spending, it has been claimed.

According to the Interactive Media In Retail Group (IMRG), internet businesses that have survived the downturn and the recent postal strikes can now begin planning for the festive rush.

David Smith, director of operations at the organisation, said online shopping has proved "remarkably resilient" in the face of the difficult economic climate.

He pointed to recent consumer research by the group which concluded that 93 per cent of people intend to do some or all of their Christmas shopping over the web this year.

Mr Smith added that businesses are unlikely to feel the effects of any further postal strikes over the festive period, with many having already altered their logistics to cope with the problem.

"Many [companies] had switched to alternative carriers during the strike and have not switched back," he noted.

According to a recent report by IMRG and Capgemini, the Christmas rush is set to come earlier for e-retailers in 2009, with shoppers eager to avoid the threat of further postal strikes by stocking up on gifts further in advance.
