Safety is top of worry list for supply chains

Product safety and quality have been found to be the most commonly voiced problem connected to supply chains, it has been reported.

With more than one in five companies admitting that they had experienced "frequent and serious" problems with safety and quality of their goods, an Industry Week report does much to outline the biggest problems faced by many companies.

Without outsourcing a supply chain, a company is leaving itself vulnerable to shouldering these costs on its own.

Product recall, the study finds, is more common than many presume, and it is costing businesses a great deal to look after in house.

In a finding that could leave many businesses in serious trouble, Industry Week reported that: "60 per cent of survey participants indicated that their supply chains lacked the required flexibility to rapidly respond to changing customer demands and interruptions in supply."

With globalisation, many supply chains are becoming thinly stretched, as companies fail to relent to heavy investment in the process, but with rising oil costs and a tightening economy throughout the West, customer demands and supply chain running costs will be forming a large part of the make up of a business' outgoings in the near future.
