Council recognised for transport safety efforts

Transport planning bosses at one local authority have been recognised for their efforts in improving the safety of their drivers at work.

The London Borough of Hackney has taken a number of steps to increase its risk management over recent years in a bid to keep employees safe on the roads.

Its fleet of more than 350 cars, vans, buses and HGVs is now subject to a new management scheme that has helped bring about cost reductions as well as improved practice.

The Fleet Management Unit offers advice on work-related safety, vehicle maintenance, journey planning and driver training, carrying out daily inspections and record keeping.

Chris Hudson, assistant director of procurement and fleet at the council, said other organisations should take similar steps to help raise standards of health and safety.

"All managers have a responsibility to build safety into all their decision-making and to ensure that their staff understand the responsibility which they have for their own and others' safety," he commented.

The authority's efforts saw it become a "business champion" under a government-backed campaign called Driving for Better Business.

Last week, engineering and design group Atkins was given similar recognition by the scheme for improving safety and efficiency in its 3,250-strong fleet of vehicles.
