Darling spooks FTA

The Freight Transport Authority (FTA) has fiercely criticised the chancellor over his decision to increase fuel duty in his latest budget.

Widely claimed to be the most important budget in a decade, the chancellor Alistair Darling faced severe criticism from many sides but the choice to add two pence per litre to the cost of fuel has sparked outrage.

James Hookham, policy director for FTA, said: "The logistics sector is the lifeblood of the UK economy, and rather than the transfusion we need, Alistair Darling has turned Dracula.

"Insolvency in the logistics sector has doubled in the last year and the number of HGV drivers looking for work has almost quadrupled. What more evidence does the government need that parts of the sector are on their knees?"

The 2p increase is likely to have an effect on most businesses but those with a significant supply chain could see the biggest change.

Extra duty on fuel could force some organisations to re-order their supply chains in order to lower their exposure to the high fuel costs.
