A government programme aimed at increasing business efficiency has helped save British companies nearly £3 billion a year, according to new figures.
The latest summary report, published by the Better Regulation Executive, showed that scrapping unnecessary paperwork and administration has saved firms £2.9 billion annually.
Over the past 12 months, the scheme has introduced a number of simplification measures to make life easier for businesses and logistics firms, including digital tachographs for HGVs.
Ian Lucas, minister for business and regulatory reform, said the steps have made "a real difference" to the everyday running of UK firms.
"Individual measures may look small but it is overall impact that adds up to real savings. And support from the business community has helped make sure that savings to businesses are felt on the ground," he commented.
Despite the progress, the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders last week called on the government to take further steps to reduce the financial and legislative burdens on transport businesses that are currently limiting demand for new trucks and HGVs.
It said reducing the enhance writing-down allowance to 60 per cent would help encourage commercial vehicle purchases and boost the motor industry.
