HGV test site closure 'an additional worry' for transport planning bosses

The closure of a testing station for HGV drivers in Wales will serve only to provide "an additional worry" for logistics transport planning bosses in the region, it has been claimed.

According to the Road Haulage Association (RHA), the facility in Llandrindod Wells will shut down this Friday (September 25th), despite concerns expressed by those in the industry.

The decision is part of a plan to move testing from current centres to a new system of contracted sites in an effort to improve flexibility and bring testing closer to operators.

However, just three days before it is due to close, there is still no agreement in place with any local firm to provide a site for testing.

Kate Gibbs, head of communications at the RHA, said that although the intentions behind the decision were welcome, the benefits may fail to materialise in practice.

"We are concerned that these efforts have not gone far enough to ensure that the service to hauliers will not be compromised either in terms of cost or site availability," she stated.

Last month, the RHA also hit out at the government's decision to add another two pence a litre in fuel duty - the third rise in nine months.ADNFCR-1654-ID-19374202-ADNFCR
