NFU cry foul over school fruit supply chain

The National Farmer's Union (NFU) is outraged over figures showing that only one in four items of fruit given out to children at schools is bought from a British farmer, it has been reported.

Fruit is handed out for free in schools across Britain but the NFU has spoken up about the lack of British produce in the supply chain.

"[The figures] tend to suggest that children in our schools are eating much less British produce than they used to be, which we think isn't very good," an NFU spokesman was quoted as saying in a Western Morning report.

"British food is fresher. It's also to do with quality and with food security. It's better for the country all round," he added.

Food supply chains have become a contentious issue for both health and environmental reasons, and many companies are realising the importance of having a supply chain which represents good ethics and a good environmental conscience.

A supply chain management company can help any business adapt its supply chain in order to either increase efficiency or simply reduce the amount of carbon dioxide emitted during the production of any goods.
