Protectionism seen as threat to supply chains

More than four in five supply chain managers who deal with international supply chains said that they fear protectionism will sink the world in to a global depression, it has been found.

The research, conducted by BDP International and published on Tuesday (April 14th), shows that although fears over protectionism are commonplace, most supply chain managers do not believe the recession will last more than another 12 months.

Richard Bolte, president and chief executive of BDP International, said: "The fact that 17 G20 members and other countries have implemented nearly 50 measures restricting trade since last November has dramatic implications for global supply chains.

"We wanted to get a better understanding of what the implications are for our customers and others, and how they may play out in the coming years."

The importance of the role supply chains play in ensuring businesses don't cut costs and increase efficiency is being increasingly recognised.

Small and medium sized companies may wish to contract a third-party supply chain management company to oversee any changes to their own logistics structure.
