The Road Haulage Association (RHA) has welcomed the findings of a Post Office report which confirmed the "extortionate price of diesel in the UK compared to the rest of Europe".
According to the organisation, it is an issue which has left UK haulage companies at a distinct disadvantage against their European competitors and is something that must be addressed immediately.
"UK hauliers are providing an essential service yet they are seemingly being penalised. And to add insult to this particular injury, we are seeing more and more foreign hauliers on UK roads, their trucks filled with tanks of diesel fuel bought on the continent for a price that is considerably lower than their UK counterparts," said RHA spokesperson Kate Gibbs.
She encouraged the government so 'sit up and take notice' and encouraged new transport minister Phillip Hammond to act upon the body's concerns as "a matter of extreme urgency".
Earlier this year, the RHA stated the new coalition programme for government made for "encouraging reading from a haulier's perspective".
