Retailers looking to improve the energy efficiency of their supply chains should transport multipack drinks cans rather than glass bottles, according to new research.
A study from Incept revealed that firms who opted to transport a four pack of 440ml cans instead of a six pack of 275ml glass bottles saved an average of 6.4 grams of CO2, reports Materials Recycling Week.
Nick Gazzard, Incept chief executive, told the news provider the study was conducted to encourage businesses to think about the environmental impact of their supply chains.
"Up until now everyone has been concerned with the light-weighting of products in order to save on CO2 emissions and while this remains a top priority, many retailers feel this is beginning to yield diminishing returns and so their focus is shifting to supply chains and how they can reduce CO2 through the end to end process," he said.
Supply chain analyst Dave Meyer recently told news website triplepundit.com that firms needed to keep an eye on the practices of suppliers in order to maintain sustainable supply chains.
