UK firms 'must re-double energy efficiency efforts'

The UK government must do more to help improve energy efficiency and cost reduction at businesses across the country, it has been claimed.

According to the Confederation of British Industry (CBI), the "disappointing outcome" of the Copenhagen energy summit means Britain should re-double its efforts to boost efficiency.

While world leaders failed to agree on any binding global emissions cuts, UK businesses must still press ahead with plans to reduce energy consumption, it claimed.

Richard Lambert, director-general at the CBI, said companies and households currently waste some £15 million a day on energy.

"Improved energy efficiency can take us a long way towards meeting our commitments to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 2020 and at the same time will bring significant economic benefits to the country," he insisted.

He recommended that businesses should commit to monitoring and reducing energy use in 2010, as well as engaging employees, customers and their supply chains to improve energy efficiency.

Earlier this month, the CBI called on world leaders to provide "a clearer sense of direction" for global business if it is to make the "enormous investments" required to shift towards a low-carbon economy.
