EU plans to review food supply chain profit distribution have been backed by the president of the Ulster Farmers Union (UFU) Graham Furey.

In a meeting with the European agriculture commissioner Mariann Fischer the UFU president showed support for the investigation into profits and also urged Ms Fischer to use 'market management' tools to help dairy farmers in Northern Ireland.

Representatives of the Ulster Farmers Union (UFU) stressed the need for action on what they see as a 'crisis in the dairy sector' to Ms Fischer at the Balmoral Show in Belfast.

William Cromie, UFU dairy policy chairman said: "The industry is experiencing very difficult circumstances and the EU Commission has a responsibility to bring stability to our marketplace."

President of the UFU, Graham Furey, added: "Farmers feel strongly that they are not getting a proper share of the profits from the food chain and we will support the commissioner wholeheartedly as she looks into this issue."
