Businesses that are able to invest in redesigning and upgrading computer systems should do so, it has been claimed.
Joe Krischer, the founder of independent analyst and data consulting company Krischer & Associates, said that doing so can not only help reduce costs but also make them greener.
"Green data centres do not exist
There are energy efficient data centres and there are energy inefficient data centres and if you are energy efficient you can save money, a natural saving, [and there are] environmental benefits," he said.
Mr Krischer was speaking at the Green IT 2009 Conference and Exhibition in London last week, which aims to help companies develop a corporate strategy to drive an energy efficient, cost effective and sustainable IT infrastructure.
A survey of 132 visitors to the conference found that 53 per cent said that the most important reason for greening IT was to reduce the impact of energy consumption.
