Wal-Mart aims for green supply chain

One of the US' biggest retailers, Wal-Mart, is to spruce up its supply chain in an attempt to become more sustainable, it has been reported.

Speaking in Beijing on Wednesday (October 22nd), Lee Scott, chief executive at Wal-Mart, told hundreds of the company's suppliers of its plans to improve its green credentials.

Speaking about the likely focus that the firm's sustainability changes will take, Matt Kistler, head of Wal-Mart's global sustainability, said that the organisation will focus on water and energy usage, as well as a reduction in the use of packaging.

"Our environmental footprint is primarily through our supply chain as a company," Mr Kistler said.

"So we have the ability to really build a world-class, better quality, better value supply chain."

Those companies in the UK hoping to further their own green credentials may wish to contact a third-party supply chain management company, which could assess a supply chain from an outside perspective.

Not only could making a supply chain greener add credentials to a business but it could also save a company money thanks to reduced fuel consumption and more efficient processes.
