Beef supply chain 'suffering crisis of confidence'

Wednesday, 09/6/2010 04:08
The beef supply chain is suffering from a crisis of confidence as prices of the meat continue to fall, the National Farmers Union has warned.

According to a report from FarmingUK.com, there are concerns among producers about the long-term sustainability of the supply chain as a result of the current unfavourable conditions.

NFU livestock board chairman Alistair Mackintosh told the farming news provider that producers are not getting a fare share of the retail price as point-of-sale business seek to improve their margins.

"The supply chain must recognise the imbalance this present situation could lead to if it is not resolved. If processers and retailers are serious about protecting the future viability of the UK beef industry then they need to address the present situation," Mr Mackintosh said.

Earlier this year, MeatInfo.co.uk reported that the beef supply chain was reaching critical capacity as a result of a big increase in retailers' demands for mince.
