The Freight Transport Association is creating a policy forum to promote debate and the swapping of ideas.
Named the International Supply Chain Forum (ISCF), the group will guide policy and will involve shippers, operators and infrastructure providers.
All members of the FTA are allowed to take part in the forum and organisers hope with will operate as a "virtual community".
The FTA said members would be able to "get information on policy and operational issues and be able to input on policy and campaigning decisions".
Events already on the agenda for the first June 11th ISCF meeting include a workshop on improving flow through container ports and a session on managing supply chain costs.
This week the FTA also said the government had rejected a chance to cut carbon emissions by rejecting the idea of a trial for longer and heavier freight vehicles on UK roads.
Transport secretary Ruth Kelly rejected the idea of allowing "super lorries", saying the current road network was not properly equipped to handle them.
