Volvo has announced new measures designed to prevent supply chain strategies involving its vehicles being disrupted by thieves.
According to the manufacturer, long-haul truck operations are very important to the European economy.
However, thefts from heavy goods vehicles across the EU are on the rise, with about £7 billion worth of cargo being stolen.
Therefore, Volvo Trucks in installing new equipment in its vehicles, giving drivers the chance to alert security personnel immediately in an emergency situation.
Other innovations such a lockable fifth wheel that can be remote controlled have also been devised.
But Volvo transport security expert Jonas Thorngren said technology is not the only solution to this growing problem.
"The driver's knowledge and his or her routines are immensely important," he commented.
This comes shortly after the Freight Transport Association warned that the standard and scale of truck stop provision in Britain is insufficient.
According to the organisation, this is leaving many hauliers "at the mercy" of potential thieves.
