Supply chain planning: Changes to LEZ effective today

It is imperative that operators make the new Low Emission Zone (LEZ) requirements for London a crucial part of their logistics transport planning.

Changes to the LEZ, which come into effect today (Tuesday January 3rd), mean some of the oldest and most polluting diesel vehicles will be deterred from driving in the capital.

Currently, vehicles need to meet the Euro III standard for particulate matter but as of today this will be raised to the Euro IV standard.

Lorries and goods vehicles weighing more than 3.5 tonnes will be required to pay £200 a day if they do not meet the new requirements.

The Freight Transport Association (FTA) is urging operators of Y-registration (and some 51 plate) vans to keep out of the capital if they want to avoid costly charges and fines.

Natalie Chapman, the FTA's head of policy for London, said: "The penalties are such that non-compliance is simply not an option.

"Research by FTA shows that fortunately, most large HGV fleet operators will be fully compliant with, or prepared for, the move up from Euro III to Euro IV standard engines. However, for tradespeople operating vans over ten years old the LEZ will be an entirely new consideration and, therefore, preparedness will be far lower."ADNFCR-1654-ID-801253697-ADNFCR
