The UK supply chain for beef will need to expand its capacity to deal with retailers' demands for mince, reports MeatInfo.co.uk.
As a result of the ongoing trend for deals on minced beef, demand has surged and the chain is struggling to meet it.
According to the meat industry website, UK processors have been forced to stop taking carcasses, which could lead supermarkets to import more mince to meet consumer expectations.
While roasted beef has fallen by five per cent in volume, mince has seen a 1.2 per cent increase, leading to a carcase imbalance, the website said.
"The whole system is unbalanced when mince is used as a footfall-driver," Eblex market insight manager, Richard Cullen, told the website.
Eblex is the beef and lamb sector company for England, and a division of the Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board (AHDB).
