The Freight Transport Association (FTA) says the proposal to hand planning decisions to local councils could have a negative impact on the UK's transport network.
In response to the decentralisation and localism bill detailed in the Queen's speech yesterday (Tuesday May 25th), the FTA's head of road network management policy, Malcolm Bingham, said:
"Although it sounds nice in principle, by giving local councils ultimate authority over planning decisions there is a risk that those tough decisions that need to be made for the good of the country's strategic transport network as a whole will be pushed to one side."
According to the FTA, important considerations such as the adequate provision of safe and secure lorry parking may be neglected under the proposed new system.
Prior to this year's election, the FTA called on the incoming government to support the logistics industry in its bid to overcome the recession.
