Many supply chain strategies are missing the mark when it comes to budgets and schedules, new findings have revealed.
A survey by Cranfield School of Management found only a small proportion of supply chains managed to hit those two key targets on a regular basis.
Almost 200 senior executives at leading global organisations were consulted during the study, which cited a lack of leadership as the major barrier to success.
Professor Richard Wilding from the group stated: "It is clear that in some organisations, supply chain management is still perceived as a means of reducing cost; not as a means of achieving competitive advantage."
He noted that departments dealing in finance, IT and marketing needed to be more accountable for their underperformance.
In addition, the survey also highlighted a desire for many businesses to have a supply chain representative at boardroom level.
Gartner company AMR Research will be hosting Europe's first supply chain executive conference in London this September.
