Ford reveals carbon reduction plans

Ford has announced plans to reduce the carbon footprint of its supply chain.

The car manufacturer is to survey 35 global suppliers on their energy use and emissions, before attempting to implement a more eco-friendly system.

Representing nearly 30 per cent of Ford's $65 billion (£45.3 billion) in annual procurement spending, the 35 suppliers include those who make seats, steering systems, tires and metal components, which have a large carbon footprint.

Many of the participating companies already measure their greenhouse gas emissions, but the project will facilitate collaboration and the sharing of processes and practices that can drive significant emissions reductions.

Susan Cischke, the company's vice-president of sustainability, environment and safety engineering, said: "Understanding the carbon footprint of our supply chain is a crucial part of our comprehensive global strategy to reduce greenhouse gases."

Earlier this year, research from the Carbon Disclosure Project revealed that more than half of large firms would reject companies in their supply chain if they failed to meet carbon emissions targets.
