Car manufacturer Jaguar Land Rover has been focusing on its supply chain management by working out its carbon footprint and setting reduction targets to help both the environment and the company's bank balance.

As one of the world's biggest car brands, the company is on target to reach its supply chain goals, material, planning and logistics director Kevin Wall told the Financial Times.

"Our total supply chain carbon dioxide footprint in January 2008 was 186,076 tonnes a year," he said.

"We are on target to reduce this by 2,621 tonnes this year and we have a ten-year plan to eliminate 90 million road miles."

The company, which is owned by Tata Motors and produces 290,000 cars every year in the UK, began implementing its plan around five years ago when it set up its integrated Europe-wide supply chain.

The result has been a reduction of road-miles from 59,280 per week to just 30,780 per week.
