The Road Haulage Association (RHA) has lambasted a piece of European legislation on road transport as "ill-considered".
According to the RHA, the Road Transport Directive (RTD) has been a disaster from the start and is harming the haulage industry and its employees.
A recent vote in the European Parliament on whether self-employed drivers should be included in the directive was also blasted by the organisation.
"The RTD has been a mess since its inception. It is a confused mixture of road safety and social legislation... It adds further complexity to drivers; and vehicle operators have to keep two separate sets of records on working time," said RHA director of policy Jack Semple.
The body has urged European policy makers to follow the example set by the new coalition government in the UK and axe "pointless regulatory complexity and cost".
Recently, the RHA welcomed the decision to appoint Phillip Hammond to the role of transport secretary.
