Sainsbury's announces supply chain plans

Tuesday, 01/6/2010 04:50
Sainsbury's has announced plans to make a multimillion-pound investment in new technology to protect its supply chain against adverse weather.

The supermarket giant said the real-time supply chain system would enable it to keep track of the sales of food on a minute by minute basis, allowing it to accurately plan what goods to send to individuals stores each day.

Britain's famously unpredictable weather means supermarkets are often left with perishable food wastage such as salads when rain arrives in place of forecast sunny weather, but the Sainsbury's hopes this technology will help overcome that problem.

The group said it would help it reduce the amount of food that went unsold during periods of unexpected weather by around 15 per cent.

Sainsbury's supply chain director, Tim Goalen, said: "This new system allows us to react to any changes in buying pattern on the same day rather than overnight."

Last year the supermarket chain made changes to its supply chain management, including the introduction of a cost efficiency programme and a new transport management system.
