Transport planning and risk management win for Gloucestershire

Thursday, 10/9/2009 11:53
Gloucestershire county council has been recognised for its transport planning and risk management strategies.

It has become a "business champion" as part of Driving for Better Business, which is a government-backed RoadSafe scheme.

The local authority undertook a review of its entire 175-vehicle operation and brought in new proposals and measures to maximise safety and ensure compliance with legislation.

Risk assessments were also carried out and staff are now required to report all work-related traffic incidents or situations where an accident almost occurred.

"The policies we have introduced give managers and staff the information to question current practice with regard to transport and vehicle use," explained transport engineering manager Bob Gibbons.

Safety, health and environment advisor for the council Neil Chatten added that sporadic spot checks were now also part of the fleet monitoring process.

The news comes in the same week as comments from the Freight Transport Association regarding rewards for greener logistics.

It suggested incentives for carbon-cutting could come in the form of reduced tolls for certain bridges and crossings.
