Transport planning bosses could help alleviate worker stress

Employers, including those in transport planning and logistics outsourcing, should be mindful of workers who have survived redundancy.

According to the Advisory, Conciliation and Arbitration Service (Acas), bosses should be sure to take into consideration the stress levels of all employees.

The economic downturn has necessitated that many firms lay off some of their staff, which has led to a focus on these individuals, Gill Trevelyan, head of good practice services at the organisation pointed out.

However, she explained that many of the workers left behind can be affected by redundancies as well, with some experiencing guilt that they have been left behind and fear that they may lose their job in the future.

Offering advice to employers, she suggested bosses should establish whether stress is work-related and emphasised the need to ensure managers are properly resourced to deal with the situation.

"You have the ability to change things like job design to ensure demands on staff are reasonable or by providing additional training," she said.

Strain and anxiety in the workplace is not being taken into account, according to a release from Badenoch and Clark. It stated some 91 per cent of people are stressed at work.
