UK must improve renewable energy supply chain strategy

Thursday, 27/5/2010 04:39
The UK offshore wind sector must review its supply chain strategy if it is to help the UK meet renewable energy targets, it has been claimed.

According to the Offshore Evaluation Group, which consists of a number of government and industry organisations including the Department for Energy and Climate Change, E.ON and Dong Energy, renewable energy generation success relies on the UK's commitment to it.

The organisation claims that without strong support from both industry and the UK government, the wind turbine supply chain could falter. Without continuous improvement, the report states, offshore wind capacity could suffer.

Meanwhile, the UK wind energy trade association has said "reduced competition within the wind energy supply chain combined with an increase in demand for supplies, particularly from onshore wind" was hampering the sector.

"Supply chain confidence is seen as a key factor in future costs and one which can be influenced by policy-makers and developers," the organisation added.

Earlier this week, Steve Hall wrote in a blog post for ProcurementLeaders.com that a lack of clarity is hindering the UK's fight against climate change.
