Sales increase likely to lead to Waitrose extending supply chain

Supermarket chain Waitrose could be looking to extend his supply chain and create more jobs thanks to its online orders rising by an incredible 68 per cent over the Christmas period.

The retailer recently launched its own online service using Ocado and saw its takings rise by more than £200 million over the festive holidays.

"We have invested tens of millions in our online business," said Mark Price, the managing director of Waitrose.

"We have replatformed it, which was a huge job. We have opened a dark store in London [a branch dedicated to filling online orders]. We have increased the capacity … What we are now starting to see is the benefit of that coming through in the figures."

Waitrose announced that it expected to increase its supply chain in October when it unveiled plans to construct a new state of the art warehouse close to Chorley in Lancashire.
