The tram system in Blackpool has been closed for a refurbishment programme that is scheduled to last for five months.
According to the Department of Transport, the trams, which run along the seafront to Fleetwood and carry four million passengers, will be brought up to date as part of the £100 million regeneration work.
New trams will be installed during the regeneration programme, along with a replacement track and extra stops.
The refurbishment is scheduled to commence on Monday and should be completely finished by April next year.
Transport minister Sadiq Khan said: "This scheme will deliver significant benefits for the local community and I am delighted that one of my first tasks as transport minister is to give it the go ahead."
Peter Callow, leader of Blackpool Council, added that Blackpool already has a fantastic tram heritage and the new funding will ensure the tram nework has a great future too.
The Department of Transport recently announced that the East Coast Main Line will be made a public company from this week.
