Boss in transport planning 'confident over Olympics concerns'

Thursday, 27/8/2009 04:31
The transport planning boss for the 2012 Olympics has claimed the games will not disrupt the business of hauliers.

Hugh Sumner, Olympic Delivery Authority transport director sought to address the worries of the haulage industry, according to RoadTransport.com.

Among the organisations to express doubts over the forthcoming event are the Freight Transport Association and the Road Haulage Association.

It is feared the route network will disrupt work during the period when the games come to the UK.

Some 232 sections of existing roads will give athletes, officials and the media priority; however, Mr Sumner said this would "not be readily visible, will be short in duration and only apply on a number of days".

In addition, the official commented: "The orders have a timescale of two years, so there will be time for any potential problems to be addressed and amended orders to be introduced before the games, should any potential problems arise."

According to organisers of the games, good progress is being made with regard to the new network of roads and bridges being constructed in the Olympic Park.
